Dr. Varun Chaudhary, MD, FRCSC
Dr. Varun Chaudhary, MD, FRCSC is Professor of Surgery and Academic Head of Ophthalmology at McMaster University. He serves as City-wide Chief of Ophthalmology in Hamilton at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and Hamilton Health Sciences.
He is President of the Canadian Retina Society and Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. He is the Founder & Chair of the Retina Evidence and Trials International Alliance (R.E.T.I.N.A.), a global academic research initiative.
Dr. Varun Chaudhary is the Founder and Physician Lead of Retina Consultants of Hamilton (RCH), an academic and organizational initiative focused on research, education and collaboration in wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular edema (DME) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO) in Hamilton.
His academic work focuses on evidence generation in retinal disease. His main clinical and research interest include individualized treatment approaches for patients with neovascular (“wet”) age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema and and retinal vein occlusion.
He has authored more than 160 peer-reviewed publications and is Principal Investigator of the International Retina Trials Consortium, comprising multiple clinical sites. He leads the Thomas Kevill Advanced Vitreoretinal Imaging (AVI) Lab at SJHH.
He serves on international scientific steering committees and data safety monitoring boards for real-world studies and phase III randomized clinical trials in AMD, DME and RVO. He also is a member of guideline development committees related to retinal disease.
His work received research awards including the NSERC Brockhouse Canada Prize for interdisciplinary research, the Surgeon Scientist Mid-Career Research Award (McMaster University), and honors from the American Society of Retinal Specialists and the Canadian Ophthalmological Society.
